Artist Statement

Sand casting is a very enjoyable art technique because there are no rules except the earth's gravitational force dictate's that nothing will pour up above the horizontal. Building an original idea into a series of castings is very exhilarating. I feel that non-representational ideas with stylized and abstract designs are valid approaches to solve sculptural problems with casting concrete. The castings can be hung indoors or outdoors.

All the bas-relief castings are one-of-a-kind because the removal process destroys the sculpted sand mold. The secret to sand casting is that wet sand sticks together. Hence, the artistry of sand casting is captured in the hand sculpting of the wet sand mold.
