I started throwing pots in 1970 at (what is now) Southern Utah State University, where I graduated with a composite Art major in 1973. (Ceramics & Watercolor) I obtained my M.A. in Ceramics from Central Michigan University in 1982.
I enjoy making “substantial statements in clay” and have thrown pots over 150 pounds. Many of the larger pots I use as a “canvas” to display sculptured relief work which I carve on (and through) them. I also apply additional clay for a more pronounced 3-D effect. The functional ware has my own unique handles which have been thrown on the wheel, pulled, or extruded-- or are comprised of a combination of these techniques. These decorative handles have become a trademark of my work.
I was a “full-time” artist/potter for 17 years and I also taught art at various levels, working with very young children to senior citizens. I currently teach art at Alpena’s Thunder Bay Junior High School as well as doing my own artwork.
Besides doing a select few art shows, I have my art displayed in galleries and businesses in Midland, Alpena, Oscoda and Cheboygan.
